Lancôme Hypnôse Mascara Range

It is a well-known fact in the beauty community that Lancôme makes incredible mascaras. There are a lot of high end brands that also do, but arguably none are as popular as Lancôme as it is a brand that is truly renowned for its mascaras. Lancôme makes a huge variety of mascaras so today I am reviewing the four mascaras from their classic Hypnôse range to help you find out which one is right for you.

A couple of years ago I wanted to treat myself to a Lancôme mascara but there were so many out there with very similar names and I didn't know which one to choose so I hope that this helps anyone who is in a similar situation! The mascaras that I tested were the non-waterproof versions of Hypnôse, Hypnôse Doll Eyes, Hypnôse Drama and Hypnôse Star (all £22.50 from Boots). I will be comparing them against a set of criteria and I have taken photos of me wearing two coats of each of the mascaras so you can see the difference between them on my lashes. Welcome to the Battle of Lancôme's Hypnôse Mascaras...

Brush: A typical small bristle brush that makes it easy to coat every single lash but is not the best for volume.
Effect: Creates an enhanced natural look with equal amounts of length and volume.
Longevity: Still holds a curl after 8 hours but does smudge slightly in the outer corners of my eyes.
Removal: Fairly easy to remove. Comes off in two seconds with a cleansing oil but takes a bit of work if using a makeup wipe/micellar water.

Brush: A tapered conical brush that is very thick at one end for use on the majority of the lashes. The thin end of the brush makes it really easy to coat the outer lashes and bottom lashes for a wide awake effect.
Effect: Creates beautiful long and separated lashes that look very natural but fluttery. This lengthening formula ensures there are no clumps but is not very volumising.
Longevity: Lasts well without smudging or flaking. However the true lengthening effect of the mascara only lasts about 3-4 hours before it starts to look like any normal mascara.
Removal: Very easy to remove, even with a makeup wipe.

Brush: A wavy bristle brush that curves to really grip the lashes and deposit more product.
Effect: Much more volumising than the previous two and creates lashes that look very thick yet separated without clumps. The brush really allows you to grip the base of the lashes, giving the effect of a thick lash line. This is also the blackest formula of the bunch giving the darkest lashes.
Longevity: Lasts for longer than some waterproof mascaras on me and holds a curl well.
Removal: Slightly harder to remove than the previous two but still much easier to remove than waterproof mascara.

Brush: A tapered brush that is flat, not conical (I have tried to show different views of the brush so you can see if from two angles). The flat brush makes it hard to grab the lashes to create a curl.
Effect: My least favourite formula of the bunch as it is thick and clumpy and seems to make my lashes stick together. Neither lengthening nor volumising.
Longevity: Lasts 3-4 hours until the clumps start to flake off and smudge on my lower lash line.
Removal: Fairly easy to remove but takes a while to get all of the clumps out of my lashes.

Overall, my favourite mascara for long and fluttery lashes is the Hypnôse Doll Eyes and my favourite for volume is the Hypnôse Drama. I think I will be repurchasing both as I love the effect that each of them give for different occasions, and obviously I definitely need two more mascaras in my collection. I liked using the Hypnôse mascara as a good middle ground between lengthening and volumising but it wasn't anything special. And I really didn't get on with the Hypnôse Star mascara! It made my lashes look short and clumpy which is not an ideal look so I will be giving that one a miss.

I hope this has demystified the world of Lancôme's Hypnôse mascaras for you! I would love to find out if you have ever tried a mascara from Lancôme? Or do you have a different holy grail mascara? Let me know because writing this blog is a great excuse to try out lots of new products (all in the name of research of course)!
