Richard Mayne

This post is very different for me so if you are not interested in anything other than beauty/food/girly lifestyle bits please stop reading here. I totally understand that this kind of post is not something that everyone wants to see when they come to this blog for a bit of light reading but it is important to me so I want to write about it.

Tomorrow will mark exactly a year since I lost a good friend of mine in the Malaysian Airlines MH17 disaster. Richard Mayne was one of the kindest people that I have ever met, and one of the funniest too. I will never forget some of the stories that he told me that had me laughing until my cheeks hurt. I can honestly say that I have thought about Rich every single day over the past year. Sometimes I feel angry and sad about what happened but mainly I feel glad that I got the chance to know him.

I met Rich during the second year of our maths degrees at the University of Leeds as we were both applying for placement years. Although he was applying for a placement years in the UK, he wanted to go abroad and he got offered his dream placement in Australia. He was so excited and kept telling me that my placement year in Nottingham would be so boring (how right he was) and how I should apply for somewhere abroad instead! Even though we had just met at this point, I loved Rich’s cheeky humour and his ability to make anyone feel like his close friend instantly. He always made me laugh and smile, from our first ever conversation right up until our last.

Since his death, I have found out so much more about Rich that I never knew. I never knew that he climbed Everest for charity or that he was a team leader at a charity for children with diabetes as he wasn’t the type of person to brag about these things. It was so proud to know Rich when he was my hilarious and kind friend from university, and I am even prouder to have known him now that I know about all of his amazing achievements.

I’m not very good at talking about these feelings to anyone so I wanted to write something to honour Rich on the first anniversary of his death. Rich, I hope you are reading this from up there… No doubt you will be taking the mick out of me for writing a blog about trivial girly things and I would give anything to hear you saying it to me. Thank you for being my friend.
